Understanding the 2026 Boost

Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA) is a crucial non-taxable supplement for millions of Australians. The 2026 update brings a significant relief package: a combined CPI indexation and a structural 15% increase to the maximum rate cap. This guide explains exactly who qualifies and how the calculation works.

Key Rule: Rent Assistance is not a fixed payment. It is a “top-up” based on how much rent you pay. For every $1 of rent you pay above the minimum threshold, you get 75 cents back, until you reach the maximum cap.

This payment is automatically linked to your primary income support (like Age Pension or JobSeeker). However, if your rent details are outdated in the Centrelink system, you could be underpaid by hundreds of dollars a year.

Do You Qualify?

To receive this payment, you must meet the “Qualifying Payment” rule AND the “Residency” rule. Check if you fit the criteria below:

  • โœ“ Receiving Age Pension, JobSeeker, or DSP
  • โœ“ Receiving Family Tax Benefit Part A (above base rate)
  • โœ“ Paying rent to a private landlord or real estate agent
  • โœ“ Paying community housing rent (NOT state public housing)
The Rent Certificate Process

When you update your address or rent amount on myGov, Centrelink may pause your Rent Assistance until you prove your rental liability. This is done via the Rent Certificate (SU523).

You cannot download this form manually. Log in to Centrelink online, update your “Accommodation Details”, and if verification is needed, the system will post the form to you or send it to your myGov Inbox.
The form MUST be signed by the person you pay rent to (Landlord or Real Estate Agent). They must confirm the lease start date and total rent amount.
Don’t mail it. Use the Centrelink Express Plus app -> “Upload Documents” -> “Centrelink Form”. Take a photo of the signed form. This is processed much faster (usually 48 hours).
March 2026 Payment Rates

Below are the confirmed maximum fortnightly rates. “Rent Threshold” is the minimum rent you must pay to get any help. “Max Payment” is the most you can get.

Board vs Rent: The Trap
โš ๏ธ Warning: “Board and Lodging” Rule

If you pay a lump sum that covers meals + accommodation (e.g., to parents), Centrelink classifies this as “Board”. Only two-thirds of what you pay is counted as rent.

Example: You pay $300/week board. Centrelink only counts $200 as rent. This may reduce your payment significantly compared to paying $300 pure rent.
