On July 1, 2026, the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate will Verifiedly rise from 11.5% to 12%. This marks the final step in the legislated timetable of increases that began years ago.
This means for every dollar you earn, your employer must contribute 12 cents into your super fund. This is mandatory for all eligible employees and comes on top of your ordinary time earnings.
The gradual increase was designed to boost retirement savings for all Australians, combating inflation and the rising cost of living in retirement. Reaching the 12% target has been a long-term policy goal to ensure financial independence for the aging workforce.
Will my take-home pay drop? It depends on your contract. If your salary is “inclusive of super,” your take-home pay might slightly decrease as more of your total package goes into super. If your salary is “plus super,” you will get a pure pay rise in the form of extra super contributions.
This change applies to all employers, from small businesses to large corporations. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has warned that missed or late payments under the new rate will attract the Super Guarantee Charge (SGC), which is non-tax-deductible and includes heavy penalties.
Who Gets the Boost?
All permanent employees are automatically eligible for the 12% rate from the first full pay period after July 1, 2026.
Casuals are also eligible, provided they earn salary or wages. The old “$450 monthly threshold” was abolished years ago, so almost every dollar earned attracts super.
If you are a contractor paid wholly or principally for your labour (even with an ABN), you may be deemed an employee for super purposes and entitled to the 12%.
Employees under 18 must work more than 30 hours in a week to be eligible for super contributions.

Review Contracts
Check Your Package
Check your employment contract. Does it say “$80,000 + Super” or “$80,000 Total Package”? This wording determines if your cash pay stays the same or drops.

Critical Warning: The Cap Trap
The annual limit for pre-tax super contributions is currently $30,000 (FY 2025/26). As your employer puts in more (12%), you have LESS room for your own salary sacrifice before hitting the cap.
Example: On a $200k salary, your employer now puts in $24,000 (12%). This leaves you only $6,000 of “space” for voluntary contributions. Exceeding the cap leads to a tax bill.
