NZ Tax Refund Guide:
Are You Owed Money?
The New Zealand tax year ends promptly on March 31, 2026. For most salary and wage earners, the Inland Revenue (IRD) now performs an “Automatic Calculation” of your tax. This removes the need to file a complex return, but it does not mean you should sit back and do nothing. Millions of dollars go unclaimed every year because Kiwis forget to claim specific credits that the automated system cannot see.

While salary tax is automated, donations, independent earner tax credits, and working-from-home expenses for self-employed individuals are NOT. You must manually file these claims. If you worked part of the year, changed jobs, or had a baby, the likelihood of a significant refund increases drastically due to the way PAYE is annualized.
Not everyone gets a windfall. Refunds typically occur when you have been “over-taxed” during the year. Check if you fall into one of these high-probability categories.
The IRD processes millions of accounts in batches. Being aware of the schedule helps manage your expectations (and your spending plans).
Employers send final earnings data. You should gather donation receipts now.
IRD computers crunch the numbers. “Assessment” letters are generated.
Refunds land in bank accounts. If you have tax to pay, it’s due by Feb 2027.
The most overlooked refund is for charitable donations. Use this tool to see how much cash you can get back by simply uploading your receipts to myIR.
*Refund cannot exceed your total tax paid for the year.
While we all hope for a refund, some people get a bill. The most common cause in 2026 is having the wrong tax code on a secondary job.
โ ๏ธ The Secondary Tax Trap
If you have two jobs and use the standard ‘M’ code for both, you will be under-taxed and face a large bill in June. You must use a secondary code (SB, S, SH, ST) for your second income source. Check your payslips now before March 31 to fix this for the current year.
Another critical error is the PIR Rate. If you tell your bank your PIR is 17.5% but you actually earned enough to be in the 28% bracket, the IRD will add the difference to your income tax bill. Always check your PIR annually.
Do not wait for the letter. Login now to check your address, bank account number, and PIR settings.
